Launch of the International Times Archive

Come by Idea Generation Gallery on Thursday, July 16th at 6:30pm for the Launch of The International Times Archive!
As part of the Hoppy: Against Tyranny exhibition, Idea Generation Gallery hosts the launch of The International Times Archive.
The International Times was Europe’s first counter-cultural newspaper. Founded by Hoppy, Barry Miles and others, and part-funded by The Beatles, it was the voice of the underground and sold at every rave, gig and protest. The paper rapidly became a vital line of communication for a disparate counter-cultural network at a time when the media was run by traditionalist Fleet Street editors. Radical formats, illustrations and cut-up photography express the energy and radicalism of the 60s and pre-figure the Punk zines of the 80s.
The IT fearlessly published ground breaking articles by William Burroughs, John Peel, Yoko Ono and Germaine Greer. However many of the contributing writers were unable to use their real names as the paper was subject to sustained police intimidation. The night will also act as an appeal for writers to step forward and claim the admiration their journalistic bravery deserves.
The Launch Night is set to include:
~ Rare original copies of the International Times
~ Original films by Hoppy and Sue Hall / Fantasy Factory
~ ‘Against Tyranny’ Documentary Screening
~ Restaging of the legendary oil projections made famous at UFO club and Pink Floyd gigs

Those that were previously unaware of Hoppy's exursions 40 years ago will soon stand and take heed!...

"...until recently I had only the woolliest appreciation of who Hopkins is and what he has done. In 1961 he morphed from nuclear physicist to roving photojournalist, then going on to become a kingpin of the London underground movement. He brought Allen Ginsberg to the Albert Hall and established the countercultural bible the International Times before helping to launch psychedelia with the hugely influential UFO club. When, in 1967, Hopkins landed in Wormwood Scrubs, sentenced for marijuana possession by a judge who called him “a pest to society” under the punitive drug laws that almost resulted in the jailing of Mick Jagger and Keith Richards, Paul McCartney paid for a page advertisement in The Times as part of the subsequent campaign to liberalise the drug laws. Culture Label launch

Culture Label had it's launch night here on the 26th of May. It was a great success with people from all over the culture industry attending. Representatives from the Contemporary Arts Society, Saatchi Gallery and many more came to show their support.

We have now taken down the Monsters Inked show- which is very sad as it will be missed greatly.....but we do have the new exhibition "Hoppy: Talking about a Revolutionary" coming up on the 18th of June- which is very exciting.

Canvas8 launches the Changing Face of Media event

‘The Changing Face of Media’, the first in a series of events, hosted by Canvas8 (http://www.canvas8.com/), will be held on Thursday 21^st May at The Idea Generation gallery in Shoreditch.

Canvas8 has set up this event to review and discuss the increasingly blurred boundaries between film, gaming and graphic novels and where the potential for cross-platform innovation.

Key speakers at the event include:

Pat Mills – Often referred to as 'the godfather of British comics', Pat is a graphic novels writer and editor. His comics are notable for their violence and anti-authoritarianism. He is best known for creating 2000AD and Judge Dredd.

Kareem Ettouney – Kareem is the Art Director of LittleBigPlanet, co-founder of Media Molecule and the former Lead Concept Artist for Lionhead Studios. Kareem was integral to the launch of LittleBigPlanet, the evolutionary console game, and the winner of the AAIAS Interactive Achievement Award for Overall Game of the Year.

Hoppy Against Tyranny: Talking About a Revolutionary

Idea Generation Gallery are gearing up for a new exhibition of paraphernalia and photographs by veteran activist and revolutionary John ‘Hoppy’ Hopkins, many of which are being shown for the first time.

Encompassing both the grand scale of mass rallies and the squalid intimacy of bedsit and backrooms of freaks, tearaways and bohemians, these electrifying images act as a record of 1960s London on the cusp of a new era, as the city shaped up for the struggle to redefine itself as a modern metropolis.

It was an exhilarating time and Hoppy was both protagonist and observer in the story, at the vanguard of a generation which broke radically with a conservative past. Founder of legendary psychedelic night club, UFO; cofounder of radical underground newspaper, The International Times; and photographer for Melody Maker, The Times and Peace News, he was well placed to record the revolution as it unfolded.

Art Against Knives

Head along to Shoreditch Town Hall this Monday to see a one off exhibition showcasing some of the city's most exciting creatives, both present and future. Art Against Knives aims to raise awareness of the rapidly increasing amount of knife related crime and violence that effects more and more people in the East end.

Exhibitors include Anthony Gormley, Vivienne Westwood, Giles Deacon, Tim Walker, Rankin, Creatmosphere and students of Central St. Martins. ALL WORK IS FOR SALE.

The Monsters Inked show traces the development of monster drawings from beginnings, deep within the psyche of the artist, out to the sketch pad and on to the wall. Pete Fowler - he who is responsible for the psychedelic album artwork of the Super Furry Animals - has produced an astonishing new commission for our 15 ft high wall, and has provided us with affordable, limited edition collector's items for you to buy.

Also exhibiting, for the first time, is Rob Steen - the illustrator of Ricky Gervais' hugely popular Flanimals books - and another 10 artists. They are: Jonas Bergstrand, Tom Jennings, Mick Brownfield, Mick Marston, Martin Haake, Dave Needham, Nishant Choski, Ray Smith, Andrew Bannecker and Tristan Eaton.

As if that wasn't enough, we also have plenty to keep the kids, or even very big grown up kids, occupied. The guys behind Moshi Monsters have created a drawing Den, in which you can create your own monsters and add them to the ever expanding wall of fame. Also, we have created a Monster Hunt, with a prize at the end for everyone who completes it!

Intro

Hello! Welcome to the new blog for Idea Generation Gallery. Blogger seems the way forward so this is our beginning.
For those of you who haven't visited us before, and maybe those of you who have, you may be interested to know a little about us. Idea Generation is a highly successful arts and cultural PR firm, with clients including the inaugural Frieze Art Fair, the Big Chill Festival, the Clothes Show Live and the Vauxhall Collective.
A year ago, following our move to a new RIBA award winning office in the heart of Shoreditch, our very own gallery opened within the offices. We aim to welcome all to the gallery. Those seasoned gallery trekkers, those who work within the arts and media and most of all, those who are curious and would not normally visit an exhibition!
